Japan’s unemployment rate in October held steady as the availability of jobs improved and household spending fell at a slower pace, a tentative sign that a robust labor market is lending support to domestic demand.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in October was 3%, unchanged from the previous month and in line with economists’ median estimate, data showed on Tuesday. Job availability rose to the highest since August 1991.
Household spending fell 0.4% in October from a year earlier, less than the median estimate for a 0.6% annual decline, as shoppers spent less on food and transport.
The data suggests that Japan’s domestic demand could stabilise, which could ease policymakers’ concerns and reduce the need for stimulus to energise the economy and encourage inflation.
Japan’s unemployment rate has been falling partly due to its shrinking labour force and a shortage of workers in construction, healthcare and hospitality.
The jobs-to-applicants ratio rose to 1.40 from 1.38 in the previous month to reach the highest level since August 1991, separate data showed on Tuesday. The median estimate was for the ratio to rise to 1.39.
Household spending has been falling since March as lacklustre gains in real wages and worries about how the Bank of Japan’s negative interest rate policy would affect the pension system turned some consumers even more cautious, economists say.
Data on Tuesday showed consumers did increase spending on domestic travel and furniture in October, offering tentative signs that spending overall is bottoming out.
Signs that the pace of decline in household spending is easing would be welcome for Japan’s fragile economic outlook.
Japan’s economy expanded for a third straight quarter in July-September as exports recovered, but domestic activity remained weak. Other data has shown consistent declines in consumer prices, another warning sign that domestic demand lacks momentum.
An exhibition that opens tomorrow at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin will showcase the grand weddings of the Qing emperors through 153 sets of exhibits selected from the collections of rarities at the Palace Museum.
Documents, portraits, costumes, personal ornaments, dowry objects, wedding ritual objects and court musical instruments, among others, will serve to showcase the grand occasions.
The exhibition, “Ceremony and Celebration – The Grand Weddings of the Qing Emperors” runs from tomorrow to February 27 next year. (Pictured, the gold seal of an empress. Highlights include 10 pictures selected from the comprehensive illustrated record of the grand wedding of Zaitian (the Guangxu Emperor), with a total length of 12 meters; a gold seal engraved with “Huanghou zhibao” (Empress’s seal) and surmounted by a dragon knob; a bright yellow lined male dragon robe with kesi tapestry gold dragon, bat, cloud and double happiness motifs; a bright red quilted dragon robe embroidered with eight dragon-phoenix and double happiness roundels; a wooden saddle with gemstone inlays and “golden walnut wood” veneer; an iron helmet with gold filigree; and a duomu flask used in traditional Manchu weddings.
The thematic galleries will also display replicas of the Chinese emperor’s wedding room and the Empress’s Phoenix Chair, enabling the visitors to explore the splendor of the Qing royal weddings. Artefacts highlighting regional marriage practices will also be displayed, allowing visitors to get a glimpse of the commoners’ wedding practices.
The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Palace Museum, and jointly organised by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Palace Museum, with sole sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
Ohio State University student Abdul Razak Ali Artan on Monday morning set off a fire alarm on campus, the drove his car into the crowd of students evacuating the building. Then he jumped out of his car and began stabbing people with a butcher knife. In a departure from the usual denial and obfuscation, Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs was refreshingly honest, saying: “I think we have to consider that it is” a terror attack. Leftists took advantage of the occasion to call for gun control, which might have been a cogent argument were it not for one inconvenient detail: Artan didn’t have a gun. But above all, Artan was a “refugee”: the attack vindicates President-elect Trump on Muslim immigration.
Artan was no poster boy for gun control, but he may have been one for the Islamic State, which issued this call in September 2014:
So O muwahhid, do not let this battle pass you by wherever you may be. You must strike the soldiers, patrons, and troops of the tawaghit. Strike their police, security, and intelligence members, as well as their treacherous agents. Destroy their beds. Embitter their lives for them and busy them with themselves. If you can kill a disbelieving American or European — especially the spiteful and filthy French — or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever from the disbelievers waging war, including the citizens of the countries that entered into a coalition against the Islamic State, then rely upon Allah, and kill him in any manner or way however it may be….If you are not able to find an IED or a bullet, then single out the disbelieving American, Frenchman, or any of their allies. Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him….
Intriguingly, before his jihad attack, Artan demonstrated that he knew well how to play the victim card. He appeared in Ohio State University’s The Lantern, in a feature entitled “Humans of Ohio State.” In it, he spoke about being “scared” about performing his Islamic prayers in public:
I just transferred from Columbus State. We had prayer rooms, like actual rooms where we could go to pray because we Muslims have to pray five times a day. There’s Fajr, which is early in the morning, at dawn. Then Zuhr during the daytime, then Asr in the evening, like right about now. And then Maghrib, which is like right at sunset and then Isha at night. I wanted to pray Asr. I mean, I’m new here. This is my first day. This place is huge, and I don’t even know where to pray. I wanted to pray in the open, but I was kind of scared with everything going on in the media. I’m a Muslim, it’s not what the media portrays me to be. If people look at me, a Muslim praying, I don’t know what they’re going to think, what’s going to happen. But, I don’t blame them, it’s the media that put that picture in their heads so they’re just going to have it and it, it’s going to make them feel uncomfortable. I was kind of scared right now. But I just did it. I relied on God. I went over to the corner and just prayed.
Abdul Razak Artan, “third-year in logistic management,” is dead now, so The Lantern can’t go back to him and ask him if he understands better now why people might be nervous about Muslims praying, and why it isn’t just the fault of “the media.”
In a Facebook post, Artan played the victim again, but sounded a more ominous note. He referenced jihad mastermind Anwar al-Awlaki and declared: “I am sick and tired of seeing my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters being killed and tortured EVERYWHERE. … I can’t take it anymore. America! Stop interfering with other countries … [if] you want us Muslims to stop carrying lone wolf attacks.”
Meanwhile, Artan’s attack shows the wisdom of President-elect Trump’s call for a temporary moratorium on immigration from countries that are hotbeds of jihad terror activity. KARE11.com reported that “Artan was a Somali refugee and Ohio State student who left his homeland with his family in 2007. They lived in Pakistan before coming to the U.S., where Artan became a permanent resident in 2014.” Somalia and Pakistan: two epicenters of the global jihad. If Trump’s proposal becomes American law, Abdul Artan would never have entered the United States, and Monday’s jihad attack at Ohio State University would never have happened.
There is abundant evidence that admitting Muslim refugees is a jihad risk. In February 2015, the Islamic State boasted it would soon flood Europe with as many as 500,000 refugees. And the Lebanese Education Minister said in September 2015 that there were 20,000 jihadis among the refugees in camps in his country. Meanwhile, 80% of migrants who have come to Europe claiming to be fleeing the war in Syria aren’t really from Syria at all.
So why are they claiming to be Syrian and streaming into Europe, and now the U.S. as well? An Islamic State operative gave the answer when he boasted in September 2015, shortly after the migrant influx began, that among the flood of refugees, 4,000 Islamic State jihadis had already entered Europe. He explained their purpose: “It’s our dream that there should be a caliphate not only in Syria but in all the world, and we will have it soon, inshallah.” These Muslims were going to Europe in the service of that caliphate: “They are going like refugees,” he said, but they were going with the plan of sowing blood and mayhem on European streets. As he told this to journalists, he smiled and said, “Just wait.”
All nine of the jihadis who murdered 130 people in Paris in November 2015 had just entered Europe as refugees. And now the same murderous impulse has come to Ohio State University, courtesy of another “refugee.” How many more such jihad attacks must there be before the wisdom of a moratorium on immigration from jihad hotspots is universally recognized?
The Financial Secretary, John Tsang Chun-wah, will visit Beijing from Sunday to Wednesday for meetings with relevant Central Government officials in charge of financial and monetary policies.
He will visit the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council and other organizations.
Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike said Friday the metropolitan government has taken to task 18 current and former officials in connection with a soil safety issue at the relocation site for the capital’s Tsukiji wholesale food market.
Koike told a press conference the officials had been reprimanded because they were either involved in the decision not to lay a thick layer of clean soil at the site for the new market in Toyosu or they provided false explanations about the issue to assembly members.
Twelve of the 18 were handed pay cuts, with one being given the severest punishment—a 20 percent cut in pay for six months.
“I take responsibility as the head of the metropolitan government,” Koike said, adding that she had given herself a 20 percent pay cut for three months even though the officials’ decision not to follow metropolitan government policy was made before she assumed her post in August.
“I apologize again for causing trouble to relevant people in the industry and Tokyo citizens,” Koike said.
Six officials who have already retired, including Vice Gov. Mitsuru Nakanishi, were asked to voluntarily return some of their past pay.
The problem came to light in September when it was discovered that fresh clean soil had not been laid as a pollution control measure at the Toyosu site, which was previously occupied by a gas plant.
Empty concrete chambers had been installed instead, triggering public concern over the safety of food to be sold at the new site.
Although the Toyosu market was initially scheduled to open in November, Koike decided to delay its launch, saying its relocation will not take place for at least a year due to pending safety checks.
Some delegates to the Peel District School Board meeting in Mississauga (bordering Toronto) stand with their hands in their pockets or remain seated for Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada.” In their presentation to trustees, they alleged a lack of respect for Muslims in the schools.
Canadian Imam prays to Allah to increase wildfires’ flames, burn Israel
Mazin AbdulAdhim, a prominent Imam of Iraqi descent in London, Ontario who is affiliated with the radical Islamic global movement of Hizb ut-Tahrir, gleefully applauds the suspected arson attacks and prays to Allah to “cause the winds to increase and the fires to spread far and wide, and burn their [Israelis] illegitimate properties and all their beloved belongings to ashes.”
In a Facebook post, Mazin AbdulAdhim wrote the following:
“Aside from the interesting coincidence that all these fires spread wildly due to “unusually strong winds” just as they are trying to ban the Athan [call to prayer] across the lands they occupy, what’s even more interesting is how this event further exposes their severe weakness and near-total dependency on foreign help, as they beg for foreign assistance and aid to save them.
“They don’t control the world. They can barely even control the tiny sliver of land that was given to them for free by the British after WW1.
“Without the puppet tyrants protecting their spineless backs, and without annual welfare checks from their sugar daddy in the US, they wouldn’t last a week.
“May Allah (swt) cause the winds to increase and the fires to spread far and wide, and burn their illegitimate properties and all their beloved belongings to ashes, and take from them what they took from the people of the pure land of Al-Aqsa and its surrounding area.”
In a previous Facebook post, Mazin AbdulAdhim, praised the young Jordanian preacher who called on the Muslim nation to launch jihad to liberate Palestine and prayed to Allah to annihilate the Jews the “enemies of humanity.”
“The young hero of this Ummah [Muslim nation], a voice of courage and strength, our brother Abdul-Aziz Al-Sayfi, has been arrested by the Jordanian tyrant…
“He has been persecuted for his outspoken stance towards the liberation of Al-Aqsa, calling the army of Jordan to stand up and fulfill their duty to the Ummah in Palestine, exposing their betrayal, cowardice, and subservience to the enemies of Islam…
“The tyrants of Jordan originally arrested his father in order to silence him. Mazin AbdulAdhim also expresses his support of the re-establishment of the Islamic State, or Caliphate, which will fight the infidels around the world in order to put an end to injustice and to implement the Islamic Law (Shariah).

Ontario Imam: “Islam defines that puberty is the age of consent for marriage”
Based on Mohammad’s marriage to 9-year-old Aisha, a prominent Imam from London, Ontario explains, that Islam defines puberty as the minimum age of consent for marriage and adds capability as a condition.

Hong Kong’s economy grew by 1.9 percent in the third quarter, picking up pace from 1.7 percent growth in the previous quarter.
On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, real GDP expanded further by 0.6 percent in the third quarter, following the 1.5 percent growth in the preceding quarter, the Government said.
The Environment Ministry will introduce new measures to draw more foreign tourists to Japan’s eight national parks by 2020, when the country will host the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, ministry sources said Saturday.
The new measures include tours to areas that are currently off limits in Lake Akan in Hokkaido, known for its population of marimo balls of green algae, and improvements to cycling roads in the prairie of the Aso-Kuju National Park, which straddles Kumamoto and Oita prefectures.
The ministry currently does not allow tours to Akan National Park, where marimo can be found clustered in the lake. But the ministry plans to allow small groups for canoeing and trekking tours with a guide, according to the sources.
The ministry will also bury overhead power lines on cycling roads in the Aso-Kuju park so riders can have more beautiful views and allow tourists to observe colonies of rare flowers and watch terrain which has been affected by natural disasters such as major earthquakes in Kumamoto in April.
The plan to draw more tourists to the eight parks is part of the ministry’s efforts to take the number of foreign visitors to national parks to 10 million in 2020, more than double the present number.
It has earmarked a total of 20 billion yen ($187.4 million) in the second supplementary budget for fiscal 2016 through March, which was approved at parliament last month, and a draft full-year budget for fiscal 2017.
The ministry is also considering asking visitors to bear some of the cost of environmental conservation, the sources said.

The government will impose tougher penalties on companies that make employees work beyond the overtime limit agreed on with the labor side, sources said Tuesday.
In view of the labor ministry’s search the same day of Dentsu Inc. over the high-profile work-related suicide by a freshman female worker of the major advertising agency, the government concluded that it must take more effective measures to prevent excessive overtime work, the sources said.
As part of its work style reform initiative, the government aims to draw up specific action plans by March and introduce relevant legislation during the ordinary session of the Diet next year, they said.
The Labor Standards Act stipulates eight work hours a day and 40 hours a week. But companies may let employees work up to 45 hours of overtime a month and 360 hours a year if they conclude pacts with labor unions under Article 36 of the law.
Experts point out that the overtime regulations are virtually meaningless because the extra work hours may be extended further if management gains consent from the labor side.
Dentsu set its overtime limit at 70 hours a month under its “36” pact with the union. But the ministry suspects the company forced some employees to work more than 100 hours of overtime a month, but made them report overtime slightly shy of the 70-hour limit.
To prevent these illicit acts, the government is considering raising fines set by the law from the current ¥300,000 at most, the sources said.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A federal jury on Monday ordered Rolling Stone and one of its writers to pay $3 million in damages to a University of Virginia administrator over a discredited article two years ago about a supposed gang rape at the university.
The jury in Charlottesville, Va., had already decided on Friday, after a two-week trial, that Rolling Stone; Wenner Media, its parent company; and Sabrina Rubin Erdely, the author of the article, were all liable for defamation in a case that centered on faulty reporting and a failure to apply basic fail-safes in editing.
After deliberating for less than two hours on Monday, the jury of eight women and two men decided that Ms. Erdely was liable for $2 million of the total, and Rolling Stone and Wenner Media for $1 million. In her suit, filed in May 2015, the administrator, Nicole P. Eramo, had asked for $7.5 million in damages.
The jury found that assertions made in the story, as well as public statements made after publication by Ms. Erdely and Rolling Stone, were made with “actual malice,” the legal standard for libel against public figures. . . .
Scott Sexton, a lawyer for Rolling Stone, said on Monday that according to its agreement with Ms. Erdely, the company was obligated to cover “all liability arising out of the article.” . . .
The article, “A Rape on Campus,” was published in November 2014 and intensified national attention on sexual assault of college students. But the article was soon called into question for its reliance on a single source, identified only as Jackie, in describing a brutal gang rape at a fraternity party . . .
Her name is Jackie Coakley, and the fact that the New York Times and other news organizations won’t name her, when her vicious lies led to this $3 million catastrophe for Rolling Stone, is remarkable. It cannot be stated often enough: Jackie Coakley lied about rape. She deliberately defamed the innocent members of a UVA fraternity. Jackie Coakley’s gang-rape hoax — a LIE, a FALSEHOOD, a complete FABRICATION — was cited in testimony before a 2014 U.S. Senate committee by her fellow UVA student Emily Renda (see “A Coven of Liars: Sabrina Rubin Erdley, Emily Renda and Catherine Lhamon,” April 9, 2015). While it is good that Erdely and Rolling Stone are being punished for reprinting Jackie Coakley’s lie, it is wrong — a continuation of the same pattern of journalistic malpractice — for other news organizations to be complicit in protecting the liar who originally perpetrated this evil hoax:
Rolling Stone fact-checker Elisabeth Garber-Paul testified that she, Erdely, and editor Sean Woods trusted Coakley so completely that they didn’t even bother trying to speak to several friends whom Coakley claimed were present the night she was raped.
Garber-Paul indicated that her trust in Coakley was rooted in the “great detail” of her story, and her apparent lack of any ulterior motive. Beyond that, though, Garber-Paul also suggested she just had a “sense” Coakley was being honest.
“I had a sense she was reliving the worst moment of her life,” she said, according to local WVIR-TV.
Unfortunately for Rolling Stone, that “sense” proved to be disastrously wrong. Had the magazine bothered to reach out to Coakley’s friends, it would have quickly learned that she was known for spinning fantastic lies.
In addition to Garber-Paul, [Oct. 25] trial proceedings also included a taped deposition by Kathryn Hendley, a former friend of Coakley who was called “Cindy” in Rolling Stone’s article. Despite knowing Hendley’s identity, Rolling Stone never attempted to contact her prior to the article’s publication . . .
In her deposition, Hendley disputed several quotes attributed to her in the article, and characterized Coakley as a serial liar who created stories out of whole cloth. “Jackie had a tendency to fabricate things and it was shocking to see it in a large scale news magazine like this,” she said. She pointed to the example of Haven Monahan, a boy Coakley claimed to have met at a swimming pool she worked at. While Coakley produced photos of Monahan and shared his phone number with friends, Hendley eventually realized that he didn’t actually exist. Instead, Monahan appears to have been concocted by Coakley in a strange scheme to win the affections of Ryan Duffin, another UVA student.
In her deposition, Hendley said that she eventually stopped being friends with Coakley in 2013 because she was making up rumors and then spreading them. Earlier in the trial, it was revealed that one of those false rumors was that Hendley had contracted syphilis.
