Govt urged to tweak tunnel fees to cut jams

The government has been urged to lower toll fees for the Eastern Harbour Crossing (EHC) and to increase charges at the Cross Harbour Tunnel (CHT) to balance traffic flow between the two.

The call came after the government took ownership of the EHC at the weekend when a 30-year franchise expired.

An associate professor at Polytechnic University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Hung Wing-tat, said the proposal would mean queuing times at the CHT would reduce by 30 to 40 percent, with only a slight increase in delays at the EHC during rush hours.

The Transport Secretary Anthony Cheung has said the government needs more time to look at various options.
