Business lobby says Abe gov’t can’t rely on nuclear energy

TOKYO —

Japan’s use of nuclear power is unlikely to meet a government target of returning to near pre-Fukushima levels and the world’s No. 3 economy needs to get serious about boosting renewables, a senior executive at a top business lobby said.

Under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s energy policies, nuclear is supposed to supply a fifth of energy generation by 2030, but Teruo Asada, vice chairman of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, said Japan was unlikely to get anywhere near this.

The influential business lobby has issued a proposal urging Tokyo to remove hurdles for renewable power amid the shaky outlook for nuclear power after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

The move shows how business attitudes are now shifting as reactor restarts get held up by legal challenges, safety issues and public skepticism.

“We have a sense of crisis that Japan will become a laughing stock if we do not encourage renewable power,” said Asada, who is also chairman of trading house Marubeni Corp.

Long dependent on imported fossil fuels, Japan’s government and big business actively promoted nuclear energy despite widespread public opposition.

The government wants nuclear to make up 20-22% of electricity supply by 2030, down from 30% before Fukushima. So far, however, only two out of 42 operable reactors have started and the newly elected governor of the prefecture where they are located has pledged to shut them.

Renewables supplied 14.3% of power in the year to March 2016 and the government’s 2030 target is 22-24%.

“In the very long term, we have to lower our dependence on nuclear. Based on current progress, nuclear power reliance may not reach even 10%,” said Asada, adding the association wanted measures to encourage private investment in renewables and for public funding of infrastructure such as transmission lines.

The influential business lobby has a membership of about 1,400 executives from around 950 companies.

Andrew DeWit, a professor at Rikkyo University in Tokyo focusing on energy issues, said the push signaled “a profound change in thinking among blue-chip business executives.”

“Many business leaders have clearly thrown in the towel on nuclear and are instead openly lobbying for Japan to vault to global leadership in renewables, efficiency and smart infrastructure.”

When asked about the association’s proposals, an industry ministry official said the government was maintaining its nuclear target.

“The Japanese government will aim for the maximum introduction of renewable energy but renewable energy has a cost issue,” said Yohei Ogino, a deputy director for energy policy.

But three sources familiar with official thinking told Reuters in May that Japan will cut reliance on nuclear power when it releases an updated energy plan as early as next year.

Following the nuclear reactor meltdowns at Fukushima in 2011, Japan has had some success in overcoming one of the world’s worst peacetime energy crises, partly due to lower oil prices and liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices.

Japan has also promoted renewables but most investment has been in solar and in recent years it has cut incentives.

“There are too many hurdles for other sources of renewable power,” Asada said.

Veterans Brutally attacked by Black Lives Matter Terrorists says Army Staff Sergeant

A U.S. Army National Guard staff sergeant says he and one of his Army veteran friends were assaulted by Black Lives Matter supporters in San Antonio, Texas, Thursday Evening. “As I was getting my face stomped in and thrown through a window, they (all 4 of them) were yelling racial slurs saying how whites sucked and black lives were better,” Marc Stephen, the second victim, said on Facebook.

Stephen went on to say the San Antonio police were of little help and that they two veterans had to Uber to the hospital. He did not say what his injuries were.

Staff Sergeant Zach Coe Johnson posted on Facebook, “If any of ya’ll believe in the black Lives matter Bulls**t you can visit me and my buddy in the hospital…..we got jumped for being prior military.”

Johnson said he received a broken nose and cheekbone. He said he and his military veteran friend were hospitalized. Johnson said he received eight stitches on his face and several staples to the back of his head.

Canadian Arabic newspaper blames Holocaust on the Jews

http://en.cijnews.com/?p=42414

An Arabic-language newspaper in Canada recently published an article with the headline: “The Question Which Everyone Ignores: Why Did Hitler Kill the Jews?” Parading anti-Semitism straight onto the printing press, the Arabic paper, al-Saraha, suggests the Jews and “Jewish propaganda” were in fact responsible for the Holocaust.

Delving into Holocaust-denial from the get-go, the article accuses the Jews of inflating the Holocaust’s death toll from between “100,000 and 600,000 to six million”. According to the article, the Nazi regime’s systematic slaughter of 6-million Jews was all propaganda, fabricated by the Jews to smear Adolf Hitler – Goebbels was clearly no match.

“This Jewish propaganda succeeded, until it became prevalent throughout the media that six million Jews were victims of Hitler, even though the total number of Jews in Germany was less than a quarter of this figure that they say Hitler burned!”

Even more vitriolic, the author’s unspeakable gall to then blame the Jews for the Second World War by holding them responsible for Germany’s economic collapse in the 1920’s. Writing, “The Jews caused most of the economic collapses that occurred in the banks in the period between 1870 and 1920.”

Still playing “let’s blame everything we don’t like on the Jews”, the article goes on to say: “The first theatres of homosexuality appeared in Berlin in the 1920’s, and the first presentations of pornography appeared in 1880 and 1890 by the hands of Jewish authors”. I assume the author isn’t the biggest fan of Mel Brooks’ Springtime for Hitler.

As reported by B’nai Brith Canada, al-Saraha is published by a Palestinian Arab from the Gaza Strip, currently living in Ontario, Canada. His paper, al-Sahara – which featured this anti-Semitic drivel – is actually recommended as a news outlet for new immigrants by the London and Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership. It’s worth noting that this is an official agency funded by the Government of Ontario and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Al-Saraha is just one of several Arabic-language newspapers in Ontario that patently propagate anti-Semitism. As reported by Ilana Shneider at CIJ News, an Arabic paper based in the Greater Toronto Area, “Meshwar”, published a cartoon featuring Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu as a bloodthirsty vampire eating a Palestinian child.

Adding insult to injury, another Arabic publication in Ontario, “Al-Forqan”, had an entire article explaining that Palestinian knife attacks against Israeli Jews are a “sacred duty of jihad”.

The mainstream media, unfortunately, refuse to cover such cases, instead pushing false narratives of “Islamophobia”. The latest example being, the Toronto Star who ran an entire story on an autistic 11-year-old Muslim girl asked to leave a swimming pool for her own safety. Her mother couldn’t get in the pool with her because “there were men in the pool”. She had autism, no swimming skills and no immediate supervision. Nevertheless, the headline read, “Muslim mother cites racism after she and daughter forced to leave pool”.
