Struggling broadcaster ATV has re-hired about 160 members of staff, after laying them all off just yesterday morning.
The embattled TV station agreed a deal with its provisional liquidator Deloitte last night to stay on-air until its free-to-air licence expires on April 1st.
However, the new employment contracts state that employees cannot seek to recover their outstanding wages from either the broadcaster or the provisional liquidator before April 2nd.
ATV’s senior public relations manager – Jeff Wong – said the station’s new investor, China Cultural Media Group has already paid the staff their wages for March in cash.
Meanwhile, Labour Secretary Matthew Cheung said it’s “obvious” that ATV has not fulfilled its responsibilities as an employer and the government would not rule out legal action against it.
