Ferry reroute call to help dolphins

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Transfer ferries should be rerouted and ferry speed increased to protect Chinese white dolphins during construction of the airport’s third runway, the Advisory Council on the Environment urged yesterday.

The council endorsed the environmental impact assessment report for the third runway last September but the endorsement came with 20 special conditions attached, said council chairman Paul Lam Kwan-sing.

The council held a meeting with the Airport Authority yesterday to discuss the marine travel routes and management plan for high-speed ferries of SkyPier, a ferry transfer service provided by the airport.

Passengers can take ferries to Shenzhen, Macau or Guangzhou.

About 60 percent of the ferries will navigate north and will avoid waters where white dolphins are frequently seen.

However, 40 percent will go west and some of them will pass through those waters, which might affect the white dolphins.

Airport Authority general manager Peter Lee Chung-tang said the authority has found international specialists to assess the risk and they suggested the ferries take routes to the north of Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau, which can minimize the impact on dolphins.

However, some council members said the white dolphins still frequently appear in the waters at the north of Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau, and suggested measures to further reduce the risk of the ferries hitting the dolphins.

Council member Hung Wing-tat said: “Dolphins have good hearing. Could we install some ultrasonic equipment to warn them while ferries are navigating?”

Lam suggested some of the routes toward Western be moved to the waters between the new marine park and the third runway.

He also suggested that the speed controls should be raised to 10 knots an hour, while the authority suggested 15 knots.

The current limit is 30-40 knots. STAFF REPORTER

Abe defends national security bills

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has defended the government-proposed national security bills that are currently under deliberation in the Diet.

Abe spoke in a webcast by his Liberal Democratic Party on Monday. The proposed legislation would allow Japan to exercise its right to collective self-defense.

He said the legislation is not for going to war, but for protecting the people’s lives if a foreign country attacks Japan.

Abe said preparation would prevent war just as locking a door keeps a thief from breaking into a house.

Opposition parties have expressed concern that the legislation would lead to conscription.

The prime minister said Japan’s constitution bans involuntary servitude in Article 18. He said conscription is obviously unconstitutional as it obliges people to undergo military service against their will.

Abe said he has no intention to change the government’s interpretation of the Constitution in this regard.

Son of Boston Police captain charged in connection with Islamic State jihad terrorism plot

Alexander Ciccolo is apparently yet another convert to Islam who got the idea that it was his religious responsibility to murder Infidels. Yet there is absolutely no program in any mosque to teach converts why they should reject this supposedly twisted version of Islam, and absolutely no curiosity among law enforcement or government officials about why so many converts to Islam keep misunderstanding the Religion of Peace — all in exactly the same way.

“Son of Boston Police capt. charged in connection with ISIS terrorism plot,” WHDH, July 13, 2015:

BOSTON (WHDH) – A man from Adams has been arrested and charged in connection with a plot to engage in terrorism on behalf of ISIS.

Alexander Ciccolo, 23, was charged with being a felon in possession of firearms. The criminal complaint was unsealed on Monday.

Ciccolo is the son of Boston Police Captain Robert Ciccolo, who was one of the first responders to the Boston Marathon bombing. Capt. Ciccolo is in charge of the Boston Police Department’s 911 call center. He has served with the department for more than 25 years.

According to the complaint affidavit, Alexander Ciccolo took delivery of four firearms on July 4, 2015, which he had ordered from a person who was cooperating with members of the Western Massachusetts Joint Terrorism Task Force. Ciccolo was arrested immediately after taking delivery of the firearms, which included a Glock 17-9mm pistol and a Glock 20-10 mm pistol.

Ciccolo had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than a year in jail and was prohibited from possessing firearms.

It is alleged that Ciccolo is a supporter of the Islamic State group. According to an affidavit, Ciccolo spoke with a cooperating witness in recorded conversations about his plans to commit acts of terrorism inspired by ISIS — including setting off improvised explosive devices such as pressure cookers filled with black powder, nails, ball bearings and glass — in places where large numbers of people were gather, such as college cafeterias.

The FBI arranged for the cooperating witness to meet Ciccolo, who told the witness he had a plan to engage in domestic terrorism operations. The witness agreed to participate with Ciccolo.

On June 24, 2015, Ciccolo met with the cooperating witness in person in Pittsfield. The meeting was audio recorded. During the meeting, Ciccolo spoke about his plans to travel to another state to conduct terrorist attacks on civilians, members of the US military and law enforcement personnel.

Ciccolo told the cooperating witness he would attack two different bars and a police station. He also stated he planned to use improvide explosive devices during the attack to include pressure cooker bombs and/or portable microwave bombs.

Agents also allegedly found several partially constructed Molotov cocktails in Ciccolo’s apartment….

The Democrats’ Dilemma, Destroying a Remarkable Black Man

An intriguing scenario came to mind. If Dr. Ben Carson became the GOP presidential nominee, how would the Democrats craft their plan to destroy Dr. Carson, a black man, without being called racist?

Well, first of all, no one in the mainstream media will accuse a Democrat of racism. Democrats got an automatic pass even when they published demeaning racist cartoons of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and called her a “house nigga.”

A Democrat defaced a photo of black Republican Michael Steele painting him in black face. The caption below the shameful photo read, “Simple Sambo wants to move to the big house.”

Democrat Andrew Barovick tweeted that black Republican former candidate Christopher Moss should be the “spokes-model for Cream of Wheat or Uncle Ben’s Rice.”

Homosexual activist George Takei called Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas “a clown in black-face sitting there on the Supreme Court.” Takei’s comment drew very little, if any, criticism from the mainstream media. Had a Republican made the same comment, it would be promoted as evidence of GOP racism — the lead news story for a week.

During Obama’s campaign and presidency, the Left/Democrats branded all opposition to Obama’s agenda as racism against a black man. So how can the Left/Democrats turn around and launch a shock and awe campaign to destroy Dr. Ben Carson, a black man — portray Dr. Carson as the spawn of Satan in the minds of millions? One thing we do know is Democrats and their Leftist media operatives are shameless. They will not be deterred by their obvious hypocrisy.

As a matter of fact, the fact that Dr. Carson is a black conservative Republican will heighten the Left’s resolve to destroy the stupid Uncle Tom traitor-to-his-race SOB. The Left only likes blacks who further their lie that blacks are victims in eternally racist America. Sadly, a majority of blacks have been brainwashed into believing the lie that Democrats are their saviors, offering government programs, lowered standards and fighting off the majority of Americans who are racist.

Now get this, folks, evidence that the American dream is working for blacks is everywhere. In the humble black Baltimore suburban community where I grew up, kids and grand-kids grew up and replaced the original homes with mansions. And yet, even many of these successful blacks still believe the Democrats’ lie that blacks can’t catch a break in our country.

Self-confident uppity blacks like Dr. Carson who achieve world renown via education, hard work, and morally right choices really p— the Left off.

One Democrat tactic to destroy Dr. Carson will be to sell the notion that he is not authentically black. The Democrats will assign their media buddies to drill Dr. Carson on the last time he visited a KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). “Dr. Carson, name one rap artist you enjoy.” Don’t laugh, folks. This is what the in-bed-with-the-Democrats media did to Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, drilling him on what Hispanic foods he likes and his favorite Hispanic musical artists.

I envision a Leftist journalist releasing an explosive hit-piece article exposing the fact that Dr. Carson can’t dance, is void of rhythm. There will be talk of a viral photo of Dr. Carson, caught eating sushi.

“Dr Carson, when is the last time you ate watermelon?” Okay, the Leftist media probably will not go there.

Oh, I almost forgot, one glaring “tell” that Dr. Carson is not authentically black is I am pretty sure he has a photo ID. The Left/Democrats have said acquiring a photo ID is far too challenging for blacks. Therefore, requiring a photo ID to vote is racist and disenfranchises blacks. So, if Dr. Carson has a photo ID, he is obviously nothing more than a white guy in black skin.

Dr. Carson boldly professes his Christianity. The Left/Democrats will exploit Dr. Carson’s faith as another way to demonize him — claiming it automatically makes him a hater of homosexuals.

Rather than convincing voters of the superior merit of their agenda, Democrats usually win elections by convincing voters that Republicans are evil. For the Democrats to win the WH, they must convince millions of voters that retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson is evil. That is a huge mountain for the Left/Democrats to climb. For crying out loud, the guy specialized in saving kids’ lives (pediatrics).

In 1987, Dr. Carson became the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head — the Binder twins.

If the Left really gave a rat’s derriere about inspiring urban blacks that are dropping out of school and killing each other in record numbers, the Left/Democrats would celebrate Dr. Carson rather than launch a full court press effort to destroy him. Dr. Carson should be held up high to black youths as a shining example of what can be achieved in America if you do the right thing. Ironically, this is the reason the Left/Democrats feel they must destroy him.

I am not endorsing Dr. Carson for president. In all honesty, Ted Cruz is at the top of my list. However, it is too early to go all-in for a candidate. I just thought it interesting to ponder how the Left-wing (mainstream media) /Democrats would go about destroying this remarkable, good, decent and honorable man who epitomizes all that is great about America.

Swedish Feminists Campaign For Fatties In Clothing Ads

Gudrun Schyman, former leader of the Left Party and current leader of the Feminist Initiative party, is looking for new and innovative ways to be a buzzkill. No, she’s not going to put 100,000 Swedish Kronas (over $12,000) on fire again because of an alleged pay-gap between men and women. This time, she’s out to put an end to clothing companies using healthy and attractive women in public advertisements.

In an article posted to the Swedish newspaper Metro, Schyman points out how the problem is not just how women are being objectified in ads, but also the fact that the women are “extremely skinny,” and therefore upsetting the feminist masses. She’s also upset that transsexuals and disabled people are not displayed in these ads sufficiently.

Look, I’m all for free speech, but if we’re going to start seeing ads of transsexual midgets posing in bikinis filling the streets I just might start singing a different tune.

While the Feminist Initiative party is not really significant when looking at recent poll results, they certainly get the media spotlight even though they only managed to scrape together just over 3% of the votes in the election last year. Unfortunately, these opinions are not exclusive to this minor party.

The Social Democratic Party, which is the largest party in Sweden, and the Green Partywere in unison before the election in 2014 that they too want to ban sexist ads. The Swedish Women’s Lobby, an organization founded on the initiative of the Swedish Government, also want to prohibit such advertisements. These progressive parties and organizations don’t shy away from criticizing and shaming Christian conservatives, but this time Schyman actually gives credit to Rome for taking action by banning sexist ads earlier this year.

While we can all easily see how this is an obvious case of limiting free speech, is it not also a case of limiting the freedom of the women working as models by destroying their livelihood? Schyman seems to only be concerned with the feelings of the unattractive women who feel like they’re oppressed because weighing 300 pounds is not what society deems attractive, and even if that was the case, they would probably complain about being objectified.

The Swedish advertisement researcher Nina Åkestam was quoted by Schyman in the article about her personal experience with seeing fit women wearing bikinis in public advertisements: “The first thing that happens is that I pull in my stomach. It happens automatically, by reflex. (…) Why did I eat that yogurt this morning, why did I slow down my pace at the end of my run?”.

These reactions are identical to that of motivation. You see something that sparks an emotional response that makes you want to work to improve yourself, whether it’s seeing an exotic car that reinforces your motivation to work on your financial situation, or seeing a shredded guy at the gym making you work even harder to attain similar results.

If you recognize that your lifestyle isn’t working and start questioning it, that should be regarded as positive, as it can be the first step toward progress. However, it seems like these progressives ironically don’t want to be bothered with the concept of progress and would much rather be comfortable leading a life of gluttony and escapism by banning things that hurt their feelings.

If we’d take a look at what economic impact a ruling like this would have on the Swedish clothing giant H&M, it would be nothing short of a disaster. The H&M stock is the most traded on the Swedish stock exchange, and H&M currently has over 130,000 employees and almost 7,000 of these work in Sweden.

Most of these employees are women, which means this is yet another case of feminists screwing things up not just for men if they decide to destroy this industry. If H&M would become known as the company featuring disfigured buttergolems in their bikini clothing line because of government regulations, no one would want to buy clothes from them anymore. The only option for H&M is to move to a different country, which would basically be economic suicide by the Swedish government.

One interesting thing to note is that Veronica Palm from the Social Democratic Party pointed out that nine out of ten young women saw something wrong with their bodies while looking at these advertisements and felt like they had to change something about their appearance.

God forbid that girls receive a spark of inspiration and motivation to improve themselves – let’s instead further the degeneracy of young women by applauding hamplanets such as Lena Dunham, Meghan Trainor, or Tess Holliday! When you try to encourage a positive change for women not just aesthetically but also in terms of health, it’s offensive and should be outright banned.

Upholding individuals who have let themselves go and live unhealthy lives is recognized as a noble and virtuous act. What I find most compelling about the manosphere is without question the focus on personal growth, and it’s ironic how feminists and the manosphere are such polar opposites in this instance. To be fair though, feminists do promote women who have had their fair share of growth as well.

Why does she favor women in the second category? My guess is that the demographics of her followers are not fit – they’re fat. Schyman and her ilk only seem to be concerned with the feelings of the unattractive women who are provoked by a public display of a fit, feminine woman with the audacity to promote beauty.

Diplomatic Cable Shows U.S. Embassy Knew of Anti-Trafficking Advocate Somaly Mam’s Flaws

A leading Cambodian newspaper reported Monday that the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh knew that a prominent anti-trafficking activist had lied about her background, and suspected that one of her non-profits had been mismanaging funds. And yet, the story makes clear, the U.S. Embassy chose not to act,.

The Phnom Penh Post newspaper said Monday that the U.S. Embassy in the Cambodian capital knew for years that disgraced anti-trafficking activist Somaly Mam had engaged in deceptive practices.

The embassy also suspected that local non-profit AFESIP which operates shelters in Cambodia for victims of sex trafficking, and which Somaly Mam co-founded in 1996 had “mismanaged” its funding.

Additionally the embassy was also aware that the quality of medical and psychological care at the shelters AFESIP operates was woefully inadequate, a lack of support that had led “many unnamed interns and staff” at the non-profit to resign.

Despite that, the embassy chose to ignore the allegations on the grounds that to act could undermine funding for other anti-trafficking organizations and harm those already in AFESIP’s care.

The Phnom Penh Post article was based for the most part on a May 2012 embassy cable that the newspaper obtained after filing a Freedom of Information Act request with the U.S. government.

The cable titled “Somaly Mam Under Microscope,” which the newspaper shared with VOA sheds light into the reasoning behind the embassy’s ongoing support for the activist, despite knowing about a litany of significant problems.

Somaly Mam, the cable noted, was, “a positive force in the anti-trafficking effort” and “an effective and far-reaching spokesperson who has raised awareness and significant funding for anti-[trafficking] interventions”.

It went on to state that: “Although there are concerns that the funding may be mismanaged and that AFESIP’s shelters may be lacking in quality care, Somaly Mam’s efforts still represent a positive alternative to the severe sexual abuse victims would otherwise be facing.”

On the subject of medical care, sources told the embassy that: “[V]ictims resident in AFESIP shelters had access to psychological care only once every three months, even in cases of extreme need.”

It added: “The shelter staff was also reportedly unable to respond to emergency medical situations, even at the most basic level.”

The cable makes clear that embassy staff were aware of the allegations against Somaly Mam and the risk to U.S. taxpayers’ money of mismanagement, yet chose not to act.

A U.S. Embassy spokesman who spoke to VOA declined to comment on the contents of the cable, the Phnom Penh Post‘s story or whether staff working at the embassy had a responsibility in this instance to protect U.S. taxpayers’ money.

Somaly Mam was for years a leading figure in international efforts to combat sex trafficking. In 2009, the U.S.-based news publication Time magazine named her one of the world’s 100 most influential people. Three years earlier, the cable news channel CNN listed her as one of its heroes.

Her eponymous U.S.-based non-profit, the Somaly Mam Foundation, raised millions for AFESIP, and has long been a favorite with American celebrities such as actress Susan Sarandon and Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.

But in recent years, a string of media reports raised doubts about the stories told by some of the women her foundation put forward as sex trafficking victims. More recently, questions were asked about some of the truths behind Somaly Mam’s own well-publicized story as a victim of sex trafficking.

The reports initially ran in 2012 and 2013 in the Cambodia Daily, an English-language newspaper, and last year in Newsweek.

The Newsweek report finally prompted the Somaly Mam Foundation to conduct an investigation. Shortly afterwards, Somaly Mam was forced to step down. In September the Foundation shuttered its doors.

Undeterred, Somaly Mam founded the New Somaly Mam Fund late last year to replace the defunct foundation’s fundraising efforts.

Yet controversy continues to swirl around Somaly Mam, not least because she regularly posts images of her visits to AFESIP’s shelters in which the women and girls are identifiable.

And over the weekend, the Phnom Penh Post reported that the New Somaly Fund’s business document listed several well-respected Cambodian non-profits as partners. But when contacted by the newspaper, the non-profits denied any knowledge of the purported arrangement.

VOA was unable to reach Somaly Mam for comment.

AFESIP’s program director, Sao Chhoeurth, hung up on VOA on Monday claiming he had not seen the Post‘s article and saying he was unable to comment on allegations of the misuse of funds as it was a public holiday.

The Somaly Mam Foundation was established in 2007 to combat the trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and girls in Southeast Asia and has, since then, raised the profile of the issue.

But over the years, some of the claims made by Somaly Mam raised eyebrows, as did the organization’s use of alleged victims of sex trafficking to raise awareness and funds. Its decision to allow New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristoff to live-tweet a brothel raid in Cambodia in 2011 was also sharply criticized.

The Creeping Jewish Fundamentalism in Our Midst

American Jews are actively supporting a demographic trend that threatens the fabric of American Jewish life: the unchecked growth of Jewish fundamentalism.

Call them what you will — ultra-Orthodox Jews, “fervently Orthodox” Jews, Haredim, black hats. They will soon become the majority of affiliated Jews in the metropolitan New York area, and the religious majority in Israel. The results will be catastrophic.

We’ve read stories recently of Haredim in Israel comparing Israeli politicians to Hitler and throwing stones at women praying at the Kotel; of Haredim in New York fighting to restrict the prosecution of sex abuse claims; of Haredim in Germany threatening the fragile truce on circumcision by defending the practice of adult men sucking blood directly from the penises of infants.

And that is just the tip of the fundamentalist iceberg. In recent months, the Forward has depicted the coercion and ignorance prevalent in American ultra-Orthodox communities: in brilliant essays by Judy Brown and Shulem Deen, in exposés of Hasidic money laundering, and longer ago in its award-winning coverage of the Agriprocessors meat processing plant. And of course, “fervently Orthodox” leaders have defended, justified, covered up and explained away sexual predators in a way that would make a Vatican official blush.

What has emerged from all this is a picture of a subculture that looks more like “The Sopranos” than like “Fiddler on the Roof” — a world in which a small elite maintains power at the expense of thousands of serfs.

What we’ve also learned is that this entire apparatus of fear, manipulation and power mongering has been supported by you and by me.

We’ve learned, for example, that flagship institutions of ultra-Orthodox life are basically on the dole. Seventy-six percent of students at one of the most prominent yeshivas in the country, in Lakewood, New Jersey, are receiving Pell grants. Indeed, the top three institutional recipients of these grants are ultra-Orthodox yeshivas.

The Chabad-affiliated Michigan Jewish Institute scored $25 million in federal aid meant to go to low-income students, despite an appalling academic record and due largely to chicanery involving an online application mill.

And of course, Haredim in Israel put their American brothers to shame, diverting millions of shekels to schools that don’t provide a basic Western education, rabbinates filled with cronyism and a welfare system that keeps an entire sector of the population dependent on government subsidies.

In other words, the entire edifice of ultra-Orthodox power rests on gaming the system.

Meanwhile, “modesty brigades” and families willing to disown anyone who dares to leave patrol the walls of this contemporary shtetl. Imagine you’re an 18-year-old woman in a Hasidic enclave. You’re married, with two or three kids already, and you’ve been told that “outside” everyone is evil, depraved and miserable. You barely read English. And you know that when your cousin left, she was destitute, disowned and disgraced. There is no one to help you if you leave. You’re on your own. So of course you stay.

We are abandoning thousands of our fellow Jews to this hierarchy of power and abuse. We are doing nothing to help them.

And pretty soon, the hierarchy will overwhelm us. Demographers tell us that 49% of New York’s Jewish children are Haredi (either Hasidic or “yeshivish”). Especially in light of non-Orthodox disaffiliation, New York Jewry, within a generation, will be fundamentalist, poor, uneducated and reactionary. Non-Orthodox Jews will look like the secular Persians of Iran: once the complacent majority, now a minority oppressed by fundamentalists.

The good news is that since we are propping up this system, we have the power to weaken it.

First, mainstream American Jewish organizations must stop pretending to have common cause with Jewish fundamentalists. Just as mainline Christian denominations recognize Christian fundamentalism to be a threat to their religious values, so the mainstream of Jewish denominations — including Modern Orthodoxy — must recognize that this distortion of Judaism is actively destructive to Judaism itself.

Like Christian fundamentalism, Jewish fundamentalism is extremely new. It arose in response to modernity, and it radically changed Jewish values. Formerly, the Jewish mainstream balanced strictness and leniency: In the battle between the strict Shammai and the lenient Hillel, Hillel always won.

But the Haredi world is a phalanx of Shammais. The strictest is always the best. Moses wore a shtreimel, the fur hat that many married Haredi men wear, at the Red Sea. Scientific knowledge is evil. These are radically new Jewish ideas presented as radically old ones. Those of us who do not share them must recognize them as a threat.

And then we can begin to act. Fortunately, we don’t have to fight coercion with coercion. We don’t have to compel anyone to change his or her religious beliefs. We just have to stop artificially propping up a system that otherwise would not exist.

For example? We can demand an end to all federal and state subsidies to yeshivas that do not prepare students for contemporary economic and civic life. We can oppose all Jewish-fundamentalist efforts to take advantage of government or Jewish communal largesse. We can support our allies in Israel that are fighting for religious pluralism, for equal conscription of all Israelis, for civil marriage and for the defunding of the rabbinate.

And perhaps most important, we can publicly and financially support those struggling to escape from the oppression of ultra-Orthodoxy. For example, the organization Footsteps does wonderful work to help ex-Haredim transition to the modern world. But it is tiny in comparison with what we need. We need a Giant Footsteps —a major federation initiative to support those who leave and communicate to those trapped outside that there is vibrant Jewish life beyond the ghetto wall.

We fail to act because, I think, deep in the hearts of non-Orthodox Jews there lingers the belief that the Haredim are the real Jews, or the safeguards of our future, or perhaps the sweet, cuddly Tevyes of our imagined Yiddish roots.

But they are not. Of course, there are wonderful Haredi Jews out there. But the Haredi system threatens the demographic and cultural stability of the Jewish community, both in the United States and in Israel. Jewish fundamentalism is not good for the Jews.

Jay Laze Gets a Lesson in Rhetoric (Or, How NOT to Debate a Feminist)

In 2013, Virginia Beach pizzeria owner Jay Laze gained notoriety byoffering a 15 percent discount to customers who were exercising their Second Amendment rights. On his Facebook page last week, Laze commented on an article about an incident in Vietnam, where a water park offered free admission, leading to a mob scene in which “thousands” of men reportedly molested teenage girls wearing bikinis.

Laze compared the park’s error — exposing “80% naked women” to “instinctually driven men with no security” — to sharks in a “feeding frenzy.” And this is just common sense, really.

However, a feminist saw the comment and drew Laze into a debate on his Facebook page. She asked, “can you actually prove it’s human instinct or are you just projecting?” She screencapped the entire exchange and posted it to her Tumblr blog, saying that Laze “stated he’d rape women every time he thought he could get away with it, and that he thinks this is normal male behavior.” Did he actually say that? Well . . .

Laze wrote that this incident in Vietnam was a case of “instinct overriding self control,” and the feminist then asked, “how many times have been unable to stop yourself from raping and molesting?”

This insulting insinuation provoked Laze to respond, “You’re asking the wrong question. Ask ‘how many times would you have raped had there been no consequences?’”

The feminist replied, “that’s a great question. how many times would you have raped had there been no consequences?”

Laze then answered: “Since men have the instinct to ‘put their penis in a vagina’ I’d probably say every time.”

This is not how you win debates with feminists, sir.

Online debate can be a minefield, and many people make the kind of errors Jay Laze made, simply because they don’t have experience dealing with troll tactics of this kind. For the benefit of readers, permit me to offer a few suggestions:

  • You have the right to remain silent — If someone attacks you online, you are not required to respond. We are not accustomed to being mocked or insulted in real life, so when it happens to us online, our natural impulse is to defend ourselves. We are not racists or sexists, we are not ignorant or stupid, so when someone makes these kinds of accusations online — when our character is impugned — it is easy to be provoked into a defensive reaction. However, this will often have the opposite of the intended effect. By defending yourself against an accusation, you are pouring gasoline onto the sparks and, as illustrated by Jay Laze’s unfortunate incident, “everything you say can and will be used against you.” Sometimes, silence is the best defense.
  • Know your antagonist — It is evident to me that Jay Laze began this Facebook conversation without bothering to investigate who he was talking to. She knew who he was, but he didn’t know who shewas, and this put him at a disadvantage, because Laze didn’t anticipate her skill in steering him into a rhetorical ambush.
  • Don’t get sidetracked — Jay Laze’s original point was a good one. As someone whose business is in a beach resort town, he is obviously aware of how inadequate crowd control can lead to dangerous situations. Yet the feminist, focusing on Laze’s phrase “instinctually driven men,” sidetracked Laze toward a more general discussion of instinct as a factor in rape, a topic that Laze had originally not intended to address. He was inadequately prepared for the debate he encountered on this sidetrack, where his antagonist expertly provoked him into a rhetorical error.
  • This is not about you — Jay Laze’s antagonist pushed his buttons by accusing him of “projecting” his own personal “instinct to rape girls” onto the mob of men at the Vietnam water park. This kind of insulting insinuation should always be regarded as a flashing alarm in any such discussion. The appropriate response to such an unwarranted insult is to call out the rhetorical foul and terminate the conversation. Clearly, your antagonist is not arguing in good faith. Yet it is often the case that people react to these kind of baseless insults the way Jay Laze reacted, by continuing the discussion as if being accused of criminal behavior was nothing unusual, and then cooperating with the antagonist’s interrogation of his personal motives.
  • Beware of hypotheticals — Having let his antagonist steer him onto a sidetrack and then personalize the discussion by accusing him of being at least a potential rapist, Jay Laze finally sets a rhetorically fatal trap for himself by proposing the hypothetical scenario where rape was possible with “no consequences.” That he proposed this as a devil’s advocate is obvious enough. His original point was about the inadequate security that caused the chaotic free-for-all at the Vietnam water park, and Laze himself is an advocate of armed self-defense because he understands the need to safeguard against such possibilities. Yet Laze also intended to make a point about sexual instinct being one of the unruly human impulses that so often lead to violence, and thus was willing to stipulate that, if there were “no consequences,” he would himself behave like a savage beast.

Oops. We know exactly why feminists love to talk constantly about rape, as Ace of Spades observed: “Minus rape, feminism is rather too obviouslya list of trivial complaints by comfortable yet hysterical semi-affluent white women.” This why feminists have employed Statistical Voodoo and Elastic Definitions to gin up a phony “campus rape epidemic.” Feminists deliberately exaggerate the incidence of rape, so that they can treat all men as suspects in a criminal investigation and thus silence critics of feminism: “Shut up, because rape!”

Feminism’s mantra, “The personal is the political,” operates as an invitation for women to tell their tales of being victimized by the oppression of male supremacy. Any man is a damned fool if he thinks he can play this game — trying to make a political point by telling a personalnarrative — because however innocent he may be of any Sexist Thought Crimes, the mere fact that he is playing the feminist game will effectively put him on the defensive. Never fight a battle according to your enemy’s plan. Do not surrender the initiative by letting your enemy choose the time and place of battle. When you see that your enemy is attempting to provoke you into battle, always suspect an ambush.

As to the substance of Jay Laze’s comments, we can see that he was speaking of the Hobbesian nightmare of a lawless world — bellum omnium contra omnes, the “war of all against all” — and he is clearlyagainst this kind of anarchy. Speculating what we might do in a hypothetical apocalypse, freed from the restraints of civilization, is one of those dorm-room debates that used to occur in the 1970s when everybody had done a few bong hits and was staring at the lava lamp.

Think about that scene in Animal House, where the Deltas have turned the homecoming parade into complete pandemonium — “Remain calm! All is well!” — and Bluto spies his dream girl Mandy Pepperidge amid the chaos. He swoops down like a pirate, abducts her in a stolen convertible and, we learn in the film’s famous concluding scene, they eventually become Senator and Mrs. Joseph Blutarsky.

Everybody applauds that scene, because when you get down to it, everybody understands what feminists call “rape culture.” We recognize the beastly impulses of human nature. Unless we are complete fools, however, we also understand that the fantasy of unrestrained sexuality is nothing like the reality of what would happen under conditions of lawless anarchy. As Hobbes himself explained, in such conditions, human life would be “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

Even worse than Baltimore, perhaps.

OK, so we climb into the Time Machine and arrive at a state university dorm room in 1978. A haze of cannabis smoke fills the air, and the blacklight posters on the wall give off an eerie glow. A Pink Floyd album is playing on the stereo and everybody’s staring at a lava lamp when somebody says, “Hey, man, what would you do if you were in a swimming pool full of Vietnamese chicks in bikinis and there was no security, no rules at all?” Imagining myself at age 18 in that dorm room, presented with such a hypothetical scenario, I am very grateful that (a) there is no such thing as a Time Machine, and (b) there was no Internet in 1978.

Never forget: You have the right to remain silent.

#blacklivesmatter #blackspring 6 dead, 27 wounded in weekend shootings in Chicago

An older couple walking on Sawyer Avenue slowed as they approached the red police tape and their eyes met those of two young officers standing inside the crime scene.

“Pasale, pasale,” the officers said to the couple. “Pass.”

They ducked under the tape and stayed on the sidewalk, away from a cluster of shell casings and shattered glass.

A 21-year-old man had been gunned down there.  He was the 33rd person shot — and the sixth killed — over the weekend. In all, 11 were shot between Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning, nine more on Saturday night and another 13 on Friday night.

At least 135 more people have been shot in Chicago so far this year than last year, according to data analyzed by the Chicago Tribune.  There have been 1,419 people shot in Chicago through this past weekend compared to 1,284 during the same time last year.

The 21-year-old was in a white car that was driving in the 2400 block of South Sawyer Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. Monday when someone opened fire.

The man’s friend drove him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where police draped yellow tape around the car that blocked the ambulance bay. Two officers sat in an SUV behind the car and a squadrol sat parked outside the emergency room parking lot.

No one was in custody Monday morning, police said.
