Why so many kids can’t sit still in school today

The Centers for Disease Control tells us that in recent years there has been a jump in the percentage of young people diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD: 7.8 percent in 2003 to 9.5 percent in 2007 and to 11 percent in 2011. The reasons for the rise are multiple, and include changes in diagnostic criteria, medication treatment and more awareness of the condition. In the following post, Angela Hanscom, a pediatric occupational therapist and the founder of TimberNook, a nature-based development program designed to foster creativity and independent play outdoors in New England, suggests yet another reason more children are being diagnosed with ADHD, whether or not they really have it: the amount of time kids are forced to sit while they are in school. This appeared on the TimberNook blog.

‘Just because he’s black, doesn’t mean he’s here to rob a house’: White attorney outraged

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/attorney-outraged-cops-accuse-handyman-robbery-article-1.1969839

A furious attorney said two Washington, D.C., cops wrongly accused her innocent handyman of robbery — just because he’s black, she claimed.

Jody Westby confronted two police officers as they prepared to search 64-year-old Dennis Stucky while they responded an alleged home invasion in the mostly white neighborhood.

The stop was recorded on video, obtained by the Washington Post.

“Just because he’s black, doesn’t mean he’s here to rob a house,” Westby said while defending Stucky’s innocence.

Both of the officers in the video are black, while Westby — who eventually convinced them to let the handyman go — is white.

It started at 1 p.m. on Oct. 1, when an officer spotted Stuck shortly after the break in report. He was wearing his work clothes and carried two bags, which he later explained contained his lunch.

While she had no description of a possible suspect, the cop thought he looked suspicious. She ordered Stucky to sit on the curb and prepared to search him.

That’s when Westby rushed to his side.

As a second officer pulled up to the scene in his police cruiser, the attorney demanded to know why her handyman of 30 years was being searched.

“I’m an attorney and this is wrong. Now please leave our neighborhood,” she said. “He works for us. He’s been in this neighborhood for 30 years.”

Westby asked the cops which address they were responding to.

They answered: 4602 Foxhall Crescent.

They stopped Stucky in the 4500 block.

“That house isn’t even in this neighborhood,” Westby said in the video.

While the two blocks are close in number, the subdivision’s curvy, unlinked streets meant the home in question was three-quarters of a mile away.

Westby appealed to the second officer, while the first — still demanding Stucky sit on the curb — claimed the 64-year-old was loud and unruly when she attempted to search him.

“That’s because you’re accusing him,” Westby explained.

Finally, the cop in the car let Stucky go. Westby helped the man up, but the first officer wasn’t convinced. She demanded the two stop, an order Westby ignored. The lawyer collected a business card from the cops and told them she’s be reporting their actions.

Later, police would realize there wasn’t even a robbery: The call to police was made automatically by a resident’s home alarm system because the homeowner accidentally mistyped his garage code, the Washington Post explained.
