A street band is going to court over a decision by the Transport Department to allow traffic into what was a pedestrian precinct on weekday evenings.
The Mong Kok area was previously closed to traffic from 4pm to 10pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and from noon to 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.
However, the department recently decided to open the street to traffic at night from Monday to Friday, but to close it from 4pm to 10pm on Saturdays, and noon to 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.
The street band, Sing My Song, or SMS, said it is seeking a judicial review as the decision has affected their earnings. SMS member Lui Yuet-tin said the group has been performing in Mong Kok for four years, and he accused the department of failing to analyze the impact the change would have on local traffic and pedestrian safety.
