Surrey man, woman charged in al-Qaida-inspired terrorist plot at B.C. legislature on Canada Day

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Surrey+woman+charged+Qaida+inspired+terrorist+plot+legislature/8605678/story.html

A Surrey man and woman have been charged after a foiled domestic terrorist plot targeting the B.C. legislature on Canada Day.

RCMP say investigators outside the legislature on Monday recovered explosive devices inside pressure cookers similar to the type of bombs used in the Boston Marathon bombings.

John Stewart Nuttall, 38 and Amanda Marie Korody, 29 are charged with knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity, possession of an explosive substance and conspiring to commit and indictable offence.

Both were arrested on Monday at 2 p.m. without incident in Abbotsford and are in custody in Surrey.

“We detected this threat early and disrupted it,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia. He said although the police believe the threat was real “at no time was the security of the public at risk.”

The investigation began in February when the Canadian Security Intelligence Service tipped the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team about a possible terror plot, leading to the four-month investigation dubbed Project Souvenir.

Both Nuttall and Korody are Canadian born, but were inspired by al-Qaida ideology, Malizia said.

He said RCMP believe the suspects had planned to build and place explosive devices in Victoria for the purpose of causing death on Canada Day.

There is no indication of a link to the Boston bombings, say the RCMP.

RCMP Asst. Com. Wayne Rideout said that Nuttall and Korody’s “self-radicalized behaviour was intended to create maximum impact and harm to Canadian citizens at the B.C. Legislature on a National holiday.”

“They took steps to educate themselves and produced explosive devices designed to cause injury and death,” he said.

Rideout said the RCMP used a variety of techniques to “monitor and control” the accused throughout their conspiracy, though he said he couldn’t provide specifics now that the case is before the courts.

“The suspects were committed to acts of violence and discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques.

In order to ensure public safety, we employed a variety of complex investigative and covert techniques to control any opportunity the suspects had to commit harm,” Rideout said.

However, like the suspects in that case, police are alleging the suspects are self-radicalized.

Nuttall, born in 1974, has a criminal record including a 2010 conviction for possessing weapon for dangerous purpose. He also has convictions for robbery, mischief and breaching probation conditions.

Victoria lawyer Tom Morino said he has represented John Nuttall in the past, and was contacted by him on Monday evening.

“He and I spoke for quite some time last night about the allegations,” said Morino, adding he also spoke with Korody, who he said is in a relationship with Nuttall.

Morino said the two were arrested on Monday after returning from Victoria.

As for the allegations, Morino said the charges include: conspiracy to commit a terrorist act; furthering terrorist activity; and possession of explosive device or imitation explosive device.

He confirmed they were part of a significant investigation.

Of the specific allegations, Morino would only say: “There was a device planted. Beyond that I can say little more.”

Premier Christy Clark will talk at the legislature following the RCMP briefing. There are reports the terror plot has something to do with packages sent to the legislature.

B.C. is not immune to domestic terrorist attacks. In late 2008 and early 2009 there were at least four bombings of oil pipeline equipment at different EnCana Corp. sites in northeastern B.C.

No one was injured in the blasts, which were blamed on eco-terrorists.

Malizia said “it is very important that Canadians remain vigilant.

“We encourage the active engagement of all our citizens in protecting Canada’s national security as it is a shared responsibility,” Malizia said.

“The public is always urged to bring any suspicious activities to the RCMP’s attention through the National Security Information Network (1-800-420-5805) or by contacting the police in their community.”

Unpaid internships exploit ‘vulnerable generation’

At least 100,000 young Canadians are working as unpaid interns — with an unknown number of others missing out on key, early work experience because they cannot afford to go without a paycheque.

Liberal MP Scott Brison is on a mission to raise awareness of the issue. He’s calling on the federal government to measure the scope of the unpaid workforce, identify acceptable unpaid work placements and legislate changes to protect an increasingly “vulnerable generation.”

Wealthy kids get ‘a leg up’

Brison is all too familiar with stories of talented Canadians missing out on job opportunities early in their careers because they cannot afford to work for free.

Carrie O’Marra, for example, may not be able to receive her radio broadcasting college diploma in October, despite completing all of her coursework.

The 48-year-old mother, saddled with student loan debt and caring for her ailing parent, cannot afford to do unpaid work. Yet her school requires students in her program to complete a 160-hour internship — many of which are not paid.

“I take care of my mom who has Alzheimer’s and working for nothing is simply not an option,” says O’Marra. “I have an adult life with adult expenses.”

Brison says he doesn’t want to see this become an issue where, “children of privileged families get a permanent leg up in the workforce and on their career over everyone else.”

But, not all unpaid interns come from upper-class families.

Student organizations and lobbyists estimate between 100,000 and 300,000 Canadians work without bringing home a paycheque. Statistics Canada does not track unpaid internships.

It’s amazing how many BW still ask the question of why they can’t find a man, many of ’em feel like they’re not to blame for that at all. With bulls**t, dysfunction glorifying shows like this being aired, the nearly 75% unwedded mother rate among BW is gonna’ shoot up to damn near 100%, our people love to emulate the buffoonery broadcast by “Mr. Charlie” on “teLIEvision”…
